Authorities say they saw Gauthier hiking south, just below the international border with two duffle bags. He eventually got to a vehicle that Eldridge was driving.

When the agents detained both men, they searched the vehicle and duffle bags, discovering about 30 pounds of marijuana inside.

If convicted on the charges, each man could face a fine of up to $250,000 and five years in prison. For the time being Eldridge has been released pending trial. Gauthier is being held until a second hearing in the case on Wednesday.
