Vermont State Police arrested David Godin, 39, of Burlington on the charge of operating without owner’s consent as well as driving with a criminally suspended license after being called to the area for a trespassing complaint. The vehicle Godin was driving was reported stolen the night before in Burlington. Trooper Boudreau wrote in his affidavit that when he contacted Burlington police, they opted to charge Godin only with operating without owner’s consent because Burlington Police did not have enough evidence that they stole the vehicle, only that they were driving the stolen vehicle.

Godin was issued a citation for operating that vehicle, an Audi A4, which was being towed back to Burlington.

Later that afternoon, Vermont State Police received a complaint of a vehicle that had just been stolen from the parking lot of Vista Foods in Richford. That vehicle, a Subaru Outback with a loud muffler owned by Marlene Caplan of Frelighsburg, left Richford, traveling on VT Rte. 105 towards Enosburgh.

A citizen followed the vehicle down Rte. 105 before it turned onto Boston Post Road.

A short period of time later, Dispatch received a complaint of a robbery that had just occurred at the Jolley store in Bakersfield. The vehicle used in the getaway was the same vehicle that had just been stolen from the parking lot of Vista Foods, according to police.

The store clerk, Cassidy Conner, told police she saw a female in the passenger seat of the vehicle that the man who robbed her was driving, but could not get a good look at her.

According to court records, the robber was Godin, who had entered the store to purchase a sandwich, twisted tea, and cigarettes, but his payment method wouldn’t go through-so he walked out with those items in his hands without paying.

The pair traveled south on Route 108 into Jeffersonville, where they abandoned the vehicle in front of 12 Nolan Road, before fleeing the scene on foot. When Dispatch was notified of the abandoned vehicle and knew that it matched the description of the vehicle that was originally stolen from Richford, police responded with a K9 unit.

That K9 tracked Godin, and his accomplice, Anna Gilchrist, 29, of Burlington.

Godin was held on $10,000 bail, while Gilchrist was held on $750 bail.
