POLICE RELEASE DETAILS IN DEADLY ENOSBURGH CRASH

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department released details Wednesday morning in regard to a deadly crash in Enosburgh on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Captain John Grismore, the crash happened when 44-year-old Jason Cooper of Enosburg Falls crossed over the centerline, colliding with a Schwan Frozen Food Home Delivery truck traveling in the opposite direction. That truck was driven by Michael Hayes, 39, of Jeffersonville.

The collision caused Hayes’ vehicle to roll onto the roof, while Cooper’s 2004 Porche Cayenne rolled several times, coming to what police described as an uncontrolled rest on the side of the highway. Cooper’s vehicle caught fire after the crash, but Grismore said the fire was not a contributing factor in Cooper’s death.

Mary Larivee, 84, of Enosburgh was traveling behind the Schwan truck. Debris from the initial crash hit her vehicle, causing it to become inoperable, and it was towed from the scene.

The collision between the vehicles happened in the area of Leach’s gravel pit on Vermont Route 105. Route 105 was closed from the time of the crash, around 3:39 in the afternoon, until around 7:30 pm.

Grismore said Cooper died at the scene as a result of the crash. Investigation revealed that alcohol and speed were contributing factors, Grismore added.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department investigated the crash, with assistance from the Vermont State Police. The Enosburgh Fire Department responded with Enosburgh Ambulance and Richford Ambulance.
