MONTGOMERY SAYS ‘NO’ FOURTH TIME
If you’re having Deja Vu this morning, it may be because the story is not new- neither is the outcome.
Montgomery voters went to the polls Tuesday to voice their feelings on a proposed Town Clerk’s Office, but again voted it down, this time with a pretty hefty margin.
Voters decided 264 – 204 that they did not want to proceed with the proposal that would build a $962,000 Town Clerk’s office next to the Town Library and Fire Station. The new building would be about 2,000 square feet, including a 255 square foot vault.
Of the $962,000 proposed, $625,300 would have been raised through tax paid bond.
Plans for the existing Town Clerk’s office and Post Office building would have been determined after the new building was built.
The Selectboard was considering holding the vote last week- to coincide with the national election in hopes to draw more voters for the issue, but the vote was pushed off by a week after concerns surfaced that the vote may be in violations of a law preventing more than 2 votes in a 12-month period on the same topic.
Last week’s election drew 650 Montgomery voters. That’s 182 more than what came out to vote Tuesday on the bond vote.
