CHRISTMAS EVE FIRE CLAIMS SWANTON HOME

SWANTON: Two people fled their home on Woods Hill Road in Swanton on Thursday, Christmas Eve, morning with just the shirts on their backs, saving one of the family’s two pets in the process.

Swanton’s Assistant Fire Chief Jason Cross said his department had an engine just up the road, at a car accident, when the fire was reported to 911 but was still unable to save the structure when rescue crews arrived.

The wind-swept flames engulfed the single wide in a matter of minutes, carrying the roof of the mobile home across the road.

Spreading through the entire home in a matter of minutes as firefighters doused the flames, keeping it from spreading to either of the two neighboring properties.

Given the extent of the damage, Cross didn’t expect an exact cause of the fire to be determined, though investigators from the Division of Fire Safety as well as the Vermont State Police were both on scene.

Cross said the family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The Swanton Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from Highgate and St. Albans Town.
