MONTGOMERY’S ONCE DEAD WASTEWATER PROJECT COULD BE PULLED FROM THE GUTTER WITH FEDERAL FUNDS

MONTGOMERY: Last year, voters in Montgomery shot down a proposal that would levy a local option sales tax, with funds set to support a wastewater project within the Village Centers. That proposal was expected to generate the $2.8 million needed to fund the project and was the last piece of the puzzle needed for officials in the Town to proceed with the extensive project.
Now, if Congress acts accordingly, the Town of Montgomery could see that funding after all.
Charlie Hancock, Chair of the Montgomery Selectboard said a bill introduced by Senator Sanders would earmark those funds for the Town of Montgomery, restricting the hopes of having a municipally run wastewater system in Montgomery Village and Center.
The project has been hailed by its supporters as a way to increase property values within the Town, and generate more interest in the village centers. Supporters also say it will be a cost-effective way for residents when their existing wastewater systems fail, which for many is just a matter of time.
The bill will still need to be approved by Congress, which has yet to happen.
