MVU’s Logan Porter looks for a shooting lane in the first period of Wednesday’s game against Stowe (Ben Kaufmann, County Courier)

PENALTIES  DOOM MVU AGAINST STOWE

A showdown knotted at 0-0 after a penalty-free and evenly matched first period turned into disaster for Missisquoi against visiting Stowe on Wednesday night. The Thunderbirds entered the third period down just 2-0 before taking seven penalties – including two game misconducts – for 30 minutes in the final period. The Raiders tacked on three more goals in the third to pick up a 5-0 win in Highgate.

Just one of Stowe’s goals came on the powerplay, thanks in part to the Raiders (6-7-3) earning four penalties of their own in the third. The Raiders were able to limit their infractions to two-minutes apiece and, with MVU (3-14) taking twice as many penalty minutes as minutes played in the third, had no trouble holding off the T-Birds.

Missisquoi goalie Garrett Fregeau stopped 22 shots while playing most of the game for the Thunderbirds. He, along with Camden Bertrand, picked up misconducts in that unfortunate third for MVU and Ethan Stefianek finished the game in net – stopping three of the four Stowe shots he faced. Woody Reichelt led Stowe with two goals.

Missisquoi will look to keep five skaters and a goalie on the ice a little longer in its next game, Saturday at Harwood.
