Stephen “Merc” Edward Mercure
ST. ALBANS: Merc died peacefully in his sleep on April 30, 2024. He was born December 1, 1961, to Edward Joseph Mercure and Betty Mawn Mercure, who predeceased him.
He grew up in a vibrant family neighborhood on Brainard Street in St. Albans. He was described at the time as the kid with a big head, lots of hair, and a huge smile.
Merc assumed his automatic role in the never-ending baseball game as soon as he could stand. This served him well in the later years where he played on his father’s and brother’s State Championship Little League team. He also found a home in the middle infield for BFA in high school. He would always let you know he could hit better than anyone in the game, at least in his eyes.
Baseball was his main love from watching the Red Sox and idolizing players like Carl Yastrzemski; at a young age, it inspired him to do the same.
He stayed connected to the game long after graduating from high school in 1980. He went on to play for Babe Ruth and Legion teams. It was later he played for the Outlaws with his brother, Mark. Steve also supported his son, Masyn, in his baseball endeavors watching him play and working with him to optimize his game.
Football was “Merc’s” second love and he quarterbacked for the Bobwhites his junior year. Merc loved to go to war with his teammates. Some would go on to say, “he always had your back.”
Again, his pride and joy, Masyn, has impressed him on the football field. Steve was always on the sidelines offering support and looking ahead to future games. Steve and Masyn were best buds at the UVM Boys Basketball games, Red Sox games, and occasionally N.Y. Giants games. They were brunch regulars on Sunday at the Pourhouse. They were also regulars for family weekends at the Saratoga Track, where Steve would dazzle all with his uncanny gambling intuition. This went for darts, cards, and sports pools as well.
After graduation, Steve went to work at his first job at the Whey Plant in St. Albans Industrial Park. He enjoyed his after-hours with pool and dart leagues and fishing with his brothers and dad.
He went on to work for “Ben and Jerry’s.” He was very proud to be part of the “One World, One Heart” festival every year. His real love was working on many construction crews and siding in many housing complexes in the area. He was the person you called when the ceiling was about to fall in with 10 inches of ice. He would be up there chipping for hours and then move on to the next person in trouble.
He was a diehard Bruce Springsteen fan and an avid country music lover. He passed on his enthusiasm to all of us. And we thank him for that!
Besides Masyn, Steve also leaves his siblings, Mary Jane McMahon (Ed), Judy Mercure, Joanne Ruch, Martha Turner (Roger), and Paul Mercure (Susan). He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Mark. He also leaves multiple aunts, cousins, and friends who join us in missing him.
For “Merc” it was never goodbye, it was always, “Chee-ya.”
Merc’s family will receive family and friends on Sunday, May 19, 2024, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.
