A fire broke out at a garage off Sweet Hollow Road in Sheldon around 8 pm last night, which quickly spread to the entire garage, killing the owner, according to Vermont State Police.

Detective Sergeant Matthew Hill of the Fire and Explosive Investigations Unit said 69-year-old Larry Gregoire noticed the fire and went inside the garage to save his truck. After saving his truck, he reentered the structure a second time but never came back out.

Hill said Gregoire was overcome by heat, smoke, and gasses and couldn’t get back out of the building in time.

Firefighters found Gregoire’s body after knocking the fire down, according to Hill. His remains will be examined by the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington, Hill said.

The cause of the fire appears to have started near the back of the building where an outdoor wood boiler was, according to investigators.

Firefighters from Sheldon and Fairfield worked to extinguish the blaze for several hours on Sunday night.
