THE MONTGOMERY NEWS, week of SEPTEMBER 30, 2024

Submitted by Lois Lumbra

Goodbye to September 2024. It has been a warm month and the farmers had a good hay crop that they have cut and put under cover. Now the corn crop is being harvested, here in the Franklin County area. The pumpkin crop is great this year also.  While traveling to Derby with my friend Sue P. we passed one large farm whose yard was full of about a thousand orange and white pumpkins. No signs were up to say if they were for sale, but maybe they had just harvested them. It was a beautiful sight to see and over that way, the leaves are turning their Fall colors although not it is not quite peak yet.

September 20: News from Howard and Kathy King: Kathy’s brother, Sherman, and wife Marie Jewett paid Howard and Kathy a surprise visit. They had a very enjoyable time with them. They also visited a cousin Marilyn at Gelinas’ camp in Belvedere with Bertha Reed accompanying them. It was a nice day talking about our childhood memories. Kathy’s brother, Gerry, and wife Cheryl Jewett stopped in for a visit. Gerry seems to be doing well since his knee surgery.

September 26: Our Montgomery Quilting Circle was held at the lovely home of Cindy Gilchrist, in the Center, which overlooks the west side of all the hills and valleys. It is an amazing spot to live and so quiet. Nine ladies attended the meeting and several brought their lunch to join with others to sit around the big table and chat as we dined. We welcomed Elsie Saborowski to join the Quilting group. Sue Peters got everyone going when she announced the beginning of Show-N-Tell. There were several items shown since the last meeting including tote bags that will perhaps be on sale at the Christmas Craft Show in December. In the afternoon several strips of material were sewn, pressed, and ready to become new quilts. Everyone was hard at work, preparing the strips to be sewn, as there were several different strips to prepare. Sue Cherrier had been given a bag of nice material to be donated to the Quilters. It’s amazing to witness all these little pieces of material coming together and making such beautiful artistic creations.

September 27: Connie McFarland and I were invited to join Lois Babbitt and her sister, Doris Williams, for a shopping trip to St. Albans. We all enjoyed a sandwich at Subway before heading back home. The weather was perfect and the friendship was joyful.

September 28: Penny and her cousin Shirlene Corse planned to attend the big Harvest Fest in Underhill, to take her mother, Barbara Corse, and Penny’s mom to surprise her. It was truly a surprise and we had a wonderful time together. My niece, Lisa Carpenter, joined us for lunch at the festivities and we all enjoyed our little family gathering. Afterward, Penny and I went to Pamela and Scott Harris’ where more family was gathering in Enosburgh, to celebrate early birthdays for my niece Pamela and nephew Kyle Gratton. They have birthdays in early October and Priscilla thought it would surprise Pamela and Kyle to celebrate early as Pamela and Scott will be leaving soon. Also at the party were Pam’s sister, Priscilla, and her hubby Randy Hammond, their daughter Brittany and granddaughter Avya, Kyle’s wife Mary Gratton, and some Robtoy friends. There were two delicious cakes for all to enjoy after singing Happy Birthday and blowing our the candles.   It was a very nice time for all of us.

Coming Events: There will be a Mini Market on the lawn at Pratt Hall on October 12th starting at 9:30 am. Some of the Farmers’ Market vendors will gather with end of season offerings. It is open to the public, come and enjoy.

Happy Birthday to Roman Daybell, Pamela Harris 10/8; Calvin Smith, Jon Ramey 10/10; and Tracey Brown 10/11.

Chuckles to smile awhile:
• 1. Q: What did the bus driver say to the frog?  A: Hop on.

• 2. Teacher said to the class, “We will have half a day of school this morning.” The Class exclaimed, “Hooray!”  The teacher continued, “We will have the other half this afternoon.”
