Joseph Devino, the resident, approached the first officer to arrive on the scene. Devino began to insult verbally, taunt and threaten the officer with bodily harm, according to the records. Because there were two other people with Devino, the St. Albans Officer decided to wait for back-up before arresting Devino. “Devino then entered his garage and reappeared wielding a homemade machete.  Devino waved the machete at the Officer and again threatened him,” says the police report. In defense, the Officer took out his firearm and ordered Devino to drop the weapon. Before back-up arrived, Devino had run back to his garage, dropped the weapon and hid inside the house. When backup police arrived, Devino was taken into custody and charged with Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Aggravated Disorderly Conduct. He was processed and lodged at Northwest State Correctional Facility for lack of $ 5,000.00 bail.

St. Albans Police returned to the residence to capture Devino’s weapon. While searching for the weapon they discovered many stolen items and issued another search warrant.  According to Vermont State Police, items found included a smashed open safe, multiple pieces of stolen property and evidence taken during a burglary at Maple City Diner reported at 5:51 am this same date. The investigation will continue. Callers wishing to provide assistance may contact St. Albans Police at 802-524-2166.
