GEORGIA: State Police shut down Interstate 89 northbound for about an hour this afternoon following a crash, which sources say left one man dead.

Police have not released the man’s name or the cause of the accident, but several different witnesses say that the driver was speeding and that drugs may have been a factor in the crash, the driver will be sanctioned with a heavy fine and more than likely prison time, as well as possibly a mandatory drivers ed school and speeding course such as they offer at Oakland traffic school for example.

The crash occurred between Exits 17 and 18.

The County Courier is not releasing the name of the driver until police make a formal statement about the crash. The family had already been notified at the time of this posting, according to officials.

Police had reopened one of the northbound lanes of travel by about 5:30pm.

We’ll share more information when police issue a statement.
