BARRE – Enosburg’s brilliant season tackling the best teams Division II had to offer and postseason, which included eliminating Division III’s top team, came to a disappointing end Saturday night with a 54-42 loss to Thetford in the Division III championship.
Down most of the game after an 11-11 finish to the first quarter, the (No. 4) Hornets (13-11) rallied to even the score at 34-34 by the end of the third quarter. (No. 7) Thetford (14-10) began the final quarter on fire and pulled away for a second consecutive Division III title.
15 points from Ethan Williams and 10 from Owen McKinstry paced Enosburg, which was in pursuit of a second-ever program title after winning its only other crown in 2017. Devyn Gleason threw in eight points for Enosburg, Gavin Combs added five and Aidan Kelly chipped in four.
On the heels of knocking off top-seeded Hazen on Thursday, Enosburg showed plenty of fight in trying to erase a constant deficit and even briefly grabbing the lead.
Enosburg’s raucous fans – along with Fair Haven’s – will be back in Barre on Monday as the two schools’ girls teams face off in the Division II semifinals.
The County Courier will have a detailed report on Saturday’s game and Enosburg’s runner-up season in this week’s issue.
