ROUNDUP: JACKETS TAKE DOWN MIDDLEBURY

Milton boys basketball bolted out a 20-point halftime lead and never looked back, riding a 23-point night from Colin Mathis to a 58-48 home win over Middlebury on Thursday.

Mathis added six rebounds, five steals and four assists to his impressive night and Ben Godin joined him in double-digit scoring with 10 points. Hunter McClellan chipped in nine points and three assists and Josh Reil added seven points.

After taking its large halftime lead, Milton (7-9) let the Tigers (4-13) close its deficit to 12 points entering the fourth but was able to close out the game. Donovyn Dallas added six points for the Yellow Jackets and Caden Button scored three to help Milton to its second straight win. Victories in its upcoming games against Missisquoi and Vergennes will get Milton to .500 on the year before playoff pairings are released.

HORNETS CLOSE OUT VERGENNES

A combined 8-for-11 performance at the free throw line in the fourth quarter from Devyn Gleason and Shea Howrigan helped Enosburg hold off visiting Vergennes to earn a 48-37 win over the Commodores.

Gleason (13 points) and Howrigan (10) led the Hornets in scoring with Gavin Combs close behind at nine points. Enosburg (8-6) raced out to an 18-6 lead after a quarter and held a 26-13 halftime lead before Vergennes (11-4) crept back. A 16-5 disadvantage in the third quarter had the Commodores down just 31-29 entering the final frame. Four points from Combs, two from Danny Antillon and a free throw from Nathaniel Robtoy aided the foul shooting of Gleason and Howrigan in helping the Hornets pull out the win.

Robtoy finished with seven points, Ethan Hogaboom chipped in four, Wyatt Boyce hit a three for Enosburg’s only field goal of the third quarter, and Antillon finished with two points. The win snaps a two-game skid for the Hornets, who travel to Burr & Burton on Saturday.
