Marian C. Wetherbee

ENOSBURG FALLS: Marian C. Wetherbee, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away with her family by her side on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at the age of 97.

She was born in Enosburg Falls on June 24, 1925, the daughter of the late Fay and Belle (Fairbanks) Carpenter. Marian grew up on the Carpenter family farm in East Enosburgh, graduated from Enosburg Falls High School, class of 1943, and followed her dream to become a teacher graduating from Johnson Teacher College in 1945. She taught in the very same one-room schoolhouse she attended in East Enosburgh that included eight grades. Her teaching career also took her to Greensboro Bend, Bakersfield, East Enosburgh, and Enosburg Falls, often stating, “I just loved every minute of it.”

Marian married Manley Wetherbee on December 29, 1946, and purchased their own dairy farm in East Berkshire. In 1956, they moved to Enosburg Falls where they owned and operated Wetherbee & Leach Farm Supply. While raising four children and teaching, Marian transitioned into the bookkeeper and secretary for their ultimate endeavor—Wetherbee’s Hardware Store. Throughout her life, she also enjoyed catering with her son and family. In their golden years, Marian and Manley looked forward to their winters in Winter Haven, FL, and their summers in VT, especially at their camp on Lake Carmi. Regardless of where they were, she was active in her community, volunteering for the Enosburg Dairy Festival, and the Florida Citrus Festival, and was a member of the LVIS- Ladies Village Improvement Society, Red Hat Society, Enosburgh Grange, and the Enosburgh Historical Society. Marian had a social, fun-loving personality, and was most happy when engaging and chatting with people, and children— she always had a smile and a kind words.
