MONTGOMERY NEWS, WEEK OF DECEMBER 4, 2023
It’s December and we are decorating our homes and town. Maggie Elkins and I have decorated the Village Park for years. The big balsam tree has outgrown us so we have put lights around the monument and on our our little trees that are growing nicely. It is Sunday, the beginning of the Advent Season. We have our Church all decorated inside, looking very beautiful.
Our Church Service had many changes today as Rev. Purvee was scheduled to do his last Service with us. He called Merle to let him know that he was coming down with something, and not knowing what exactly, thought it best to cancel. We had made special plans with him seeing it would be his last service with us. John Gorton was invited to come also, Merle received the Sermon from Mr. Purvee entitled “A Coming and Going.” Merle filled in, Sandy Bowman read the Bible Scriptures, John Gorton and I did the Communion, and Patrick Evans played “Crown Him With Many Crowns” for a special anthem. It was a beautiful service. Rev. Purvee plans to fulfill his last service with us on the first Sunday in January.
The Quilting Circle met at the home of Sue P. on the last day of November. Sue said they finally got together after many date changes. Sue Hogan presented the finished quilt that she will be donating to the MES eighth graders to raffle off for their D.C. trip in March. It’s a beauty and she did a great job with the design. The group talked about future business at lunch and dove right into a Show-N-Tell. Several members had a great finished project to share.
We then organized ourselves and attempted to complete the Log Cabin block that had been started at a previous meeting. Committee quilt making can be a great deal of fun as well as serious blunders. 1/4-inch seams can cause joy as well as angst. At the end of the day, all was well and several members retreated to Bernie’s Restaurant for adult refreshments. The December meeting will be a luncheon at Bernie’s on 12/7. If you’re in the area, stop in and say ‘Hello’ or ‘Merry Christmas!’
