MONTGOMERY NEWS, Week of February 12, 2024

Sunday, 2/11: What a beautiful sunny week we have just enjoyed, although the wind was chilly. Thursday through Saturday have been my type of weather. I used a shovel to break up the ice on the sidewalk, now it’s all melted away. There were a couple of places that were buried in soft dirt, which is now mud, but it is supposed to freeze up again.

2/10: Penny and I went shopping today and upon arriving back home we heard thunder. That is a sign of colder weather coming in. The sugar makers are making syrup with this window of warmer weather.

2/11: Lay speaker John Gorton prepared and led the church service with his sermon entitled “Transfiguration.” This was Transfiguration Sunday, the last Sunday before Lent, making Christ’s transfiguration on the mountain with Elijah and Moses. Yes, Lent starts on February 16th. Our church’s Annual Meeting was held right after the Service to review our 2023 reports from the Trustees, Auditors, United Women in Faith, Minutes of Administrative Meetings with our District Superintendent, Membership, etc. The front covers were copied from a painting Veronica de Saint Phalle had done for her mother and a big ‘Thank You’ to Linda Carpenter for doing the front and back covers for us. Merle V.G does all the copies of each report and once they are completed his wife, Linda, and Lois Lumbra help put them together. It’s all complete for another year.

We watched Elle Purrier-St. Pierre run another race this afternoon, beating her all-time mile race record, at The Armory in NY.  Penny gets so excited and jumps out of her chair cheering Elle on, it’s exhilarating. Congratulations Elle, we are happy for you and love you. Tonight is the big, anticipated Super Bowl football game.

Maggie Elkins has enjoyed her birthday this week not only on its special day 2/8. She and her son Clay ate out at the Lucky Buffet in St. Albans, Jon and Barbara Walker took her to the East Side Restaurant in Newport, and Maggie’s sisters, Joanne Kane and Susie Erwins, got together for a visit and enjoyed pizza and other snacks. While I was chatting with Maggie on her birthday, she noticed three deer, out the window, as they were crossing the road headed to the field.

On 2/6 I gifted my wild animal quilt to Joe Vallender that I had created by hand in 1988 with the help of a very dear friend, Connie Cabana Emch, who did the tying. I recently was invited to the Montgomery Quilting Circle, and I took this quilt that had been put away upstairs for years. On the way to the quilting meeting for Show ‘n Tell, a little message came to me that I shared with Sue Peters, “I know someone I can give this quilt to.” I then told her about Joe helping at the house several times. Since Joe has a cabin and wild animals around, this would be a nice ‘Thank You’ gift for him from my daughters and me. It was the perfect gift for him, he loved it.  Joe’s son and family are our neighbors across the street.

Happy Birthday wishes to Railynn Marie Wells, Elle P. St. Pierre 2/20 (Elle came in second in last week’s race), Barbara Burns 2/22, Morgan Daybell, Gracie Lanphear 2/24.
