Lorraine Holmes St. Onge
MONTGOMERY: Lorraine Holmes St. Onge, age 86, passed away at Franklin County Rehab in St. Albans on March 6th, 2024, following a sudden change in a long-term health concern.
Lorraine was born on February 4th, 1938, in East Montpelier, the daughter of Kenneth C. Holmes and Irene Thompson Holmes. She attended the East Montpelier Four Corners one-room schoolhouse for eight grades and then Montpelier High School. Before her marriage, Lorraine worked in Montpelier as an underwriter at Union Mutual Insurance where she made many lifelong friends.
She married Arthur St. Onge on August 7, 1959, and they traveled wherever Arthur’s work would take them throughout New England. Lorraine and Arthur returned with their family to Montgomery in 1964 when they started their own construction company, A.L. St. Onge Contractor.
Lorraine became the Postmaster of the Montgomery Village Post Office in 1972, retiring after 30 years.
Always civic minded, Lorraine was a member of the Montgomery School board in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s; Treasurer of the United Methodist Church, Trustee of the Clap Estate, and a member of the United Methodist Women’s Society, to name a few.
Lorraine and Arthur enjoyed camping at Lake Carmi and spending the winters at their home in Deltona, Florida where they spent many hours on the river, boating, sunbathing on the beach, driving around in their convertible and motorcycle, as well as entertaining many friends and family.
She leaves behind her daughter, Donna St. Onge and partner Bob Blair of Florida; and her sons, Stephen St. Onge and his wife, Lisa of Colchester, Arthur “Artie” St. Onge Jr. of Montgomery, and Randall “Randy” St. Onge and his wife, Stacey, of Montgomery. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Scott St. Onge and his wife Kristen and their son Wes, Elizabeth Edwards and fiancée Joe Postemsky and their children Charlotte and Avery, Christopher Edwards, Jamie Curtis and his wife Hollie and their children James and Seanna, David McGinley and fiancée Anna Boland, Leanne Leach(Jared McGinley) and their children Noah and Natalee, Brooke and her husband Bryant Boissonneault and their daughter Drew, Madison St. Onge and her boyfriend Matt Perley, Thomas, and Alex St. Onge.
She also leaves Marjorie St. John of Essex, Clinton Holmes and his wife Joyce of Richford, Lawrence Holmes and his wife Donna of Essex, Raymond Holmes and his wife Linda of Guilford, Sonia Holmes of Richford, and Gale Holmes of South Burlington; sister-in-law Marylin Abell and her husband, Rodney “Mickey” of Enosburg Falls, brother-in-law Kenny (Rollin) Shover of St Albans; and many nieces and nephews.
Lorraine was predeceased by her parents, her husband Arthur, grandson Jared McGinley; her brothers Clifton Holmes, and Clayton Holmes, sister Gertrude Austin; her son-in-law, Bill Hanlon; and her sisters-in-law, Arlene Lariviere, Pauline Baker, Lillian Hicks, Alice Shover, Beverly Sylvester, and Albina Gibney.
Special thanks to the staff at the Franklin County Rehab where she was loved like family, they all called her Grams.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, March 14th, 2024, from 5 – 8 pm at the Goss-Spears Life Celebration Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 15th, 2024, at 11 am at Pratt Hall 2044 N. Main St. Montgomery, VT 05470, with Rev. Bill Neil officiating. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family in the Montgomery Village Cemetery.
