MONTGOMERY NEWS, SUNDAY, MARCH 10, 2024

by Lois Lumbra

3/10: An early morning rain turned into a heavy snowstorm for the higher elevations. Travel time for Merle and Linda Van Gieson was 34 minutes to come down from their residence to Church. They had over seven inches of snow up their way while here in the village we had about 2 inches, also heavy wet snow. This afternoon the weather has changed to a misty rain.

Merle made it in time to lead our morning Church Service with his message entitled “Jesus Saves.” For a devotional, Merle read a poem I had written about him and his broken-down truck when he was at a Church Conference meeting over 200 miles away. He had to return home using only 3rd gear. Vivian Elbe read today’s Bible passages, and Sandy Bowman led the Prayers and Concerns. Merle and Patrick Evans wore their new Cross pins that they had received last week in recognition of being faithful servants to this Church. John Gorton will fill the pulpit next Sunday,  3/17.

3/4: Penny saw a Robin — perhaps a sign of Spring? We have had such a mild winter, for us Vermonters. Although I hope I’m wrong, I keep saying we will probably get our winter weather when we expect May flowers. This warm weather will probably end sugaring. I got a small bottle of new syrup today, just to have a taste. I will make some pancakes. Yummy!! From the wild side of life, Sue Peters says she has over 30 turkeys and beautiful deer at her property, almost daily. She has a lovely spot for almost any kind of animals.

3/8: Sue Peters and I attended Montgomery’s 8th grade Washington, D.C. class trip fundraiser, the Family Night Karaoke, Spaghetti Dinner, several kinds of desserts made by the 8th graders, and the drawing for the Vermont Theme Quilt created by the Montgomery Quilting Circle. The principal, Sandy Alexander, welcomed us and showed us to the gym. Dressed in aprons, the 8th graders did a fabulous job as waitresses and waiters serving everyone as people came and sat. Several children had signed up to sing karaoke. They all did well but little Henning Daberer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Daberer, became the show stopper. He held onto that microphone like a pro and sang. Sue and I said he was the star of the show. Congratulations to Stacy Doe who was the quilt winner. Stacy is the school office Administrative Assistant. This was truly a family fun evening to get out with their families, friends, and neighbors, and the children had lots of fun playing with their friends in the huge gym.

Our sincere sympathy in the death of Lorraine St. Onge who passed away on March 6th. Calling hours are scheduled at Goss Funeral Home on Thursday evening, March 14th, from 5-7 pm, and a funeral service will be held Friday at Pratt Hall at 11 am in Montgomery with Rev. Neil officiating.

The current ongoing Art Gallery event, “Skiing Through Time, a tour of Montgomery’s History of Snow,” is presented by the Montgomery Center for the Arts. The recent history of Montgomery includes a core identity as a ski town celebrating the local saga of snow and slalom with an exhibit of vintage gear and memorabilia. The gallery will be open Saturdays and Sundays, March 10th through April 14th, 12-4 pm.

Saturday, March 30th: Rabies Clinic, at the Montgomery Elementary School parking lot, 11:30 am – 12:15 pm. Bring their previous vaccination records.

Saturday, March 30 afternoon family fun event: “MONTGOMERY CHARITY EGG HUNT” at the Rec Center. Starting at 1 pm, come and meet the Easter Bunny, play games, and enjoy a teacup raffle; then at 2 pm, the Egg Hunt. There will be a Hot Dog stand, cotton candy, and other treats.

Chuckles of the week:

Q: What do you get when you cross poison ivy with a four leaf clover? A: A rash of good luck.

Q: “Knock, Knock, Who’s there?” “Irish.” “Irish who?” “ I wish you a Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
