Donald A. Caster

SWANTON: Donald A. Caster, a long-time area resident, passed away peacefully in his home on August 4, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born on March 2, 1945, in Montreal, Quebec, Don was the son of the late Reginald and Jean (Topp) Caster. He was 79 years old.

Don married his beloved wife and best friend, Carole Mitchell, on September 20, 1969. Together, they shared 54 wonderful years of marriage. A long-time railroader, Don began his career with the Canadian National Railway, later becoming a marketing manager with Central Vermont Railway. In 1994, Don became Director of U.S. Sales with A.N. Deringer until his well-earned retirement in 2010.

An ardent Canadiens fan, Don grew up playing hockey in Canada, later joining the Friday night men’s league in St. Albans. His love of hockey was matched only by his enthusiasm for golf, which he embraced with equal fervor. As a member of the Champlain Country Club, Don logged many hours on the course, working to tame his wrist shot into a more appropriate chipping swing.

In addition to his loving wife, Don is survived by his three children, Brent Caster of Newburgh, NY, Chris Caster of Swanton, and Tiffany Renaudette (Josh) of Franklin, and his seven grandchildren Jackilyn Olson (Zach), Joey (Bella), Jenna, Emma, and Jack Caster, and Cayley and Cole Renaudette. A devoted Pa, one of Don’s greatest joys was watching his grandchildren grow.

Don is also survived by his brother, Douglas Caster (Linda), and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother Kenny Caster, sister Heather Murkett, and many cherished friends who undoubtedly greeted him in heaven to line up a tee time.

Don will be remembered for his hardworking demeanor, his determination, and his infectious personality. Most of all, he will be remembered for the unwavering love, dedication, and support he had for his family and his friends. Don will be dearly missed by all who have had the privilege of knowing him.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at 11 am at the St. Albans Bay Cemetery, Lake Road, St. Albans, with Pastor Preston Fuller officiating.

Don’s family asks that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Honored to be serving the family of Don Caster is Rett Heald of the Heald Funeral Home, where messages of condolence are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com
