August 17: Maggie Elkins and her sister,  Susie Ewins, participated in the Ladies Invitational Golf Tournament at the Enosburg Country Club, while enjoying a perfect day weather wise, and a couple of fun golfers to play with. It was a great day to be together and have fun. This was the fourth Invitational held, that we have played in, and they hope to play in many more.

August 18: The 68th Jewett Reunion was held at the Richford Recreational Field with 29 family members present, each bringing potluck to share. Marilyn Gelinas won the 50/50 raffle, which she donated back to the Reunion Fund. Kathryn J. King lead the Lord’s Prayer. Wayne Jewett has become the eldest man at the age of 84; Bertha Reed at the age of 82 was the eldest lady member; youngest boy was Calvin Smith; youngest girl was Chloe Johnson; largest family present was Donna Jewett with 15.  Traveling the farthest were Shayne and Chris Johnson; grand prize winners were Junior Jewett and Bertha Reed; Cheryl Jewett won the Zucchini Bread made and donated by Kathryn King; door prizes were won by Bertha Reed and Wayne Jewett. Everyone had a wonderful fun time.

August 19: Sue Peters invited me to the monthly Senior Luncheon provided by Parma Jewett for all that had signed up. Parma made homemade Baked Beans, coleslaw, rolls and a cake with icing and fresh fruit. The beans were a hit with all, they were perfectly done and flavored in every way. A young lady, Christen, stopped and invited the group to attend her “Chair Yoga” scheduled every Wednesday, starting in September, at the Public Safety Building from 10-11am. While eating our luncheon, Lois Babbit and her sister Doris asked if I would like to go along with them to Enosburg the next day.

August 20: I accompanied the two sisters to St. Albans, and we had a great day shopping and then ate at the Pie In The Sky before returning home. Yes there were still were showers, however we remained dry by using our umbrellas. In spite of the construction traffic and rain most the afternoon, we had a good time visiting.

August 22: Sue Peters accompinaied me to the graveside funeral service for my brother Bud and Roberta Martin at their final resting place in Waterbury Center. Rev. Jason McConnell officiated the Service, and Military Honors from the Air Force, with folding of the flag and presented to nephew Kyle Gratton. There were many wonderful friends of our families that attended and joined us after at the Methodist Church where Roberta and family attended in their earlier years before moving to Enosburgh. Much appreciation goes out to niece Melissa Tice and her helpers who had set up for everyone to share fellowship and homemade desserts, coffee and cold drinks.

August 24: A Lobster Meal fundraiser was held Saturday night at Abe Bernard’s property, on the Longley Bridge Road, with Tosca Smith helping with the food preparations. Many local people enjoyed the many prepared salads, and desserts. There was a 50/50 raffle and Corn Hole games were enjoyed by many. This fundraiser will benefit the opening of the new Food Shelf that will open later this Fall at the Town Hall.  Best of luck to the new crew!

August 25: It’s Sunday and a beautiful start to the day. Merle Van Gieson prepared and led the Methodist church worship service, with his message “Lessons from a Sheep Dog” based on a true story. I asked our organist to play the song “Beyond the Sunset” in memory of my brother Bud Martin and his wife Roberta. In the afternoon Penny and I took a ride up Black Falls Road to meet and visit with our friend. It was so quiet outside, we enjoyed the sounds of the birds and the cool breeze on our faces. Very nice indeed!!!

Happy Birthday wishes to Derrick Butler 9/3; Allison Bowen 9/4; and Asher West 9/5.

Chuckles for the week: 1.) At a couple’s counseling meeting the speaker mentioned that couples are so disconnected that 85% of husbands do not know their wife’s favorite flower. Jon turned to his wife and whispered, “It’s self rising isn’t it?” #2.) Nine out of 10 times when I lose something it’s because I have put it in a safe place. #3.) Q: Where’s the best place to plant flowers at school? A: In kindergarten.

The local schools begin their academic year on Monday, August 26.  When my five were young ones, on summer vacation, the summers seemed forever and ever, now time goes by so fast. Enjoy the days ahead and the week folks.

Love to all, MLTA
