Milton’s girl’s soccer team, including a total of zero seniors, needed a little time to get rolling this season. Things got clicking at the right time and produced a stunning 5-1 win for the No. 14 Yellow Jackets at No. 3 Fair Haven in the Division II playdowns on Wednesday.
“We read the offense well and played right in their attackers, which helped,” said Milton coach Shawntel Burke.
Holly MacLellan recorded a first-half hat trick for Milton (5-9-2) to help the underdogs to a 3-1 lead at the break. Emma Grasso assisted the first goal and Taylor Dowling provided the helper on the second. Cianna Tomasi finished a Willa Wright offering to keep the Milton offense going in the second half and Abi Martel was led on a breakaway by Grasso for Milton’s fifth goal.
Another upset in the Division II bracket gives Milton a genuine shot in the upcoming quarterfinals. No. 11 Mt. Abraham (6-8-1) beat No. 6 Stratton Mountain on Wednesday, setting up a Saturday showdown between the Yellow Jackets and Eagles in Bristol. Mt. Abe eked out a 1-0 win at Milton on October 13th and Milton will be happy to have another shot.
“We are looking forward to a rematch at Mt. Abe Saturday,” Burke said.
Saturday’s contest is slated for a 3:00 kickoff in Bristol.
