Gary R. Cutting
EAST RICHFORD: Gary R. Cutting, age 68, passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington.
He was born in St. Albans on March 24, 1953, to the late Harold and Barbara (Knisley) Cutting.
Gary grew up on his family’s farm in East Bakersfield and Enosburgh. He attended Bakersfield Elementary School and graduated from Enosburg Falls High School in 1972. After graduation he served in the Navy for four years as a hydraulics mechanic on the JFK Aircraft Carrier during the Vietnam War. Upon his return home, he began trucking gravel, then went on to work for Kane’s Dairy Farm in Sheldon. Eventually, he took a position at Blue Seal Feeds where he retired after 30 years. On May 11, 1991 he married the love of his life, Susan Mercy and the two raised their family in East Richford.
Gary was an avid outdoorsman, allowing him to be a successful hunter and fisherman, a passion that started at a very young age. The first day of hunting season was like Christmas for him and his brothers. He enjoyed and was quite proud of dressing and preparing the game he caught for his family and friends. Aside from hunting and fishing, he had a love for being in the woods, especially during sugaring season. Gary created his small family operation at home in 1997, where supper was served almost every night during the season for many years. Most recently, he enjoyed helping his close friend Doug Paul tap and maintain his sugar woods for Boyce Family Sugary. He was so proud of his garden from start to finish. At the end of the season when it came time to canning and freezing, Gary and Susan were a great team in getting the big job done. Gary loved watching football and cheered on his Green Bay Packers every chance he got. He was such a handyman and thoroughly enjoyed wood-working.
Gary’s most recent pride and joy were his grandchildren and took to his new role as “Papa” flawlessly. Gary will be remembered by family and friends as a man of few words, but when he spoke, the words were important and well considered.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Susan Cutting of East Richford; children, Jenna Chagnon and her husband Aaron of St. Albans, and Logan Cutting and his wife Emily of Berkshire; cherished grandchildren, Callie Cutting (Callie girl), Rayelle Chagnon (Ray Ray), and Eli Cutting (Eli Ross); siblings, John Cutting and his wife Francoise of Swanton, Peggy-Ann Record and her husband Jim of Berkshire, Steven Cutting and his wife Paula of Franklin, and Michael Cutting and his wife Pamela of Franklin; mother-in-law, Charlotte Mercy of Franklin; siblings-in-law, Gary Clough of Enosburgh, Linda Lowell and her husband Ron of Montgomery, Arnold Mercy and his wife Linda of Montgomery, Carroll Mercy and his wife Karrie of Georgia, Judy Willey and her husband Brent of Troy, Lorna Taft and her husband Tom of Swanton, Marie Guay and her husband Danny of Newport, Michael Mercy and his wife Denise of Montgomery, David Mercy of Montgomery, Darlene Morse and her husband Harold of Eden, and Pamela Wilson and her husband Warren of Richford; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and his four-legged best friend, Copper.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Jean Clough and his father-in-law, Gordon Mercy and brother-in-law Brad King.
In keeping with Gary’s wishes there will be no public services at this time.
