Charlie Yates drives along the baseline for a lay-up against Missisquoi during a December 23rd thriller in St. Albans. BFA won that game, 49-47, and will travel to MVU on Tuesday for the rematch (Ben Kaufmann, County Courier)

A LOOK AHEAD AT BOBWHITES VS. THUNDERBIRDS (ROUND 2)

The best thing about BFA-St. Albans’ buzzer-beating, 49-47 win over Missisquoi on December 23rd wasn’t the shock of MVU roaring out to a double-digit lead in the first half. Nor was it the pandemonium in the BFA gymnasium as the Bobwhites rallied – pandemonium that made Patrick Gym in March seem like a Tuesday night men’s league game at the Y. It wasn’t the absurdity of 17-year olds making late free throws while their parents nearly went into cardiac arrest in the stands, or even the sight of Kam Dunsmore darting between defenders and selflessly dropping a pass to Nick Voyer for the game-winning baseline lay-up.

BFA’s Case Ballard and Milton’s Colin Mathis vie for the jump-ball to start off Saturday’s Yellowjacket win in St. Albans (Ben Kaufmann, County Courier)

YELLOW JACKETS DOMINATE BOBWHITES 59-45

A shorthanded Milton squad made the short drive to St. Albans for a matinee game Saturday and left with a 59-45 triumph over the Bobwhites to reach the 8-3 mark on the season.

FIVE-GOAL SECOND PROPELS MISSISQUOI PAST ST. J

Missisquoi exploded for five goals in the second period to take a second straight win in the form of a 6-3 victory over St. Johnsbury. Hunter Mason notched a hat trick and an assist in the effort for MVU.

T-BIRDS HOLD OFF VERGENNES’ LAST MINUTE ASSAULT

The winless Commodores (0-10) have a potent lineup which makes their record mind-boggling when watching them at their best. Two weeks after losing at Enosburg, VUHS was tied with Missisquoi (8-3) at 49-49 with less than three minutes to go. In the last five days, the Commodores have been in but ultimately lost games at BFA-Fairfax, BFA-St. Albans and now MVU.

Taylor Yates works himself free for a buzzer-beating basket at the end of the second quarter on Monday. Yates tallied a team-high 10 points in BFA’s 52-36 win over Vergennes (Ben Kaufmann, County Courier)

BOBWHITES SURGE PAST VERGENNES MONDAY NIGHT

BFA-St. Albans needed its standard defensive showcase against a tougher-than-advertised Vergennes Union team. The Bobwhites had difficulty scoring but never trailed in Monday’s 52-36 win over the Commodores.

Sophie Burns goes to the basket for two of her game-high 24 points on Wednesday. Burns scored 12 points in a three-minute span in the second quarter to help her Enosburg Hornets pull away for a 57-31 win over Lamoille (Ben Kaufmann, County Courier)

LAMOILLE BURN(S)ED BY HORNETS

A blistering run of 12 points in a 2:15 span from Sophie Burns helped Enosburg to a 22-point second quarter on Wednesday and a second win over Lamoille on the season, this one by a 57-31 score.

Missisquoi’s Jackson Porter gets his shot ahead of a diving defenseman to briefly knot the score at 3-3 with a shorthanded goal. Harwood would quickly score three unanswered to leave Highgate Arena with a 6-3 win over MVU (Ben Kaufmann, County Courier)

WOLVES OVERCOME BOBWHITES’ BIG START

ST. ALBANS – BFA-St. Albans got off to an electrifying start and held a nine-point advantage on title contender South Burlington after a quarter on Monday, but the Wolves pulled the plug and drew the shades for good measure to leave BFA in the darkness with a 69-50 final.

BFA-St. Albans athletic director Dan Marlow addresses a section of fans after referees alerted him to behavioral issues during a December 23rd game between BFA and Missisquoi (Ben Kaufmann, County Courier)

FAN BEHAVIOR AMONG TOP CULPRITS IN REFEREE SHORTAGE

Syncing with a trend across the country and across most sports, Vermont finds itself with a shrinking pool of certified officials to referee junior varsity and varsity basketball. Though not the only source of blame, an erosion in spectator behavior seems to be the most significant factor in the struggle to recruit new officials.
