FARMING SYMPOSIUM PLANNED
A familiar sight in Franklin County, an idle tractor and mower sit in a hayfield that is growing quickly because of overabundant rainfall, but is too wet still to mow.

South Burlington: The 2017 No-Till and Cover Crop Symposium will take place Feb. 16 at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in South Burlington.
In addition to talks by Extension specialists and farmers from Vermont, Pennsylvania and New York, the event includes poster sessions and an exhibitor fair. It is sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension’s Champlain Valley Crop, Soil and Pasture Team in Middlebury and the Northwest Crops and Soils Program in St. Albans.
Registrations will be accepted through Feb. 10. The fee is $80 and includes lunch and refreshments. Graduate students involved in regional research on cover crops, no-till or reduced tillage and/or soil health may attend for $40 and are encouraged to sign up to present a poster at the symposium.

Attendees will hear from two Pennsylvania State University Extension specialists. Dr. Douglas Beegle will discuss manure management in no-till systems. Dr. John Tooker will share his research on pest management in high residue cropping systems.
Dr. Heather Darby and Jeff Carter will provide updates on UVM Extension research on cover crops, crop rotation, soil health and other ongoing field trials. Participants also will hear from Mark Anderson of Landview Farm, a 2,300-acre dairy farm in Eagle Bridge, New York, and a panel of Vermont farmers about their experiences with no-till and cover cropping.
