Mary Celia (LaBelle) Lumbra
Mary Celia (LaBelle) Lumbra, age 80, passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2023, surrounded by family. Mary was born February 22, 1943, in Sheldon, VT the daughter of the late Lucien and Bessie (Lamonda) LaBelle.
Mary completed her GED and worked mainly in manufacturing until retirement. During her working years, she enjoyed the time she spent working as a janitor at the St. Albans School District, interacting with the children. She least enjoyed making Cherry Garcia ice cream at Ben and Jerry’s. Those damned cherries were a pain, she’d say!
Once retired, she relocated back to her favorite part of the state, Franklin County, with her husband, Graydon Lumbra. In retirement, she enjoyed volunteering with community outreach programs and volunteering with the Bakersfield Conservation Commission. In the winter months, she could be frequently found enjoying the outdoors, completing her latest puzzle, or spending time with family and friends. In the summer months, Mary would almost always be found outside gardening, hiking, participating in community activities, and spoiling her grand and great-grandchildren. Regardless of what time of year it was, she would give you a run for your money playing a round of Skip-Bo, one of her favorite card games.
For anyone who knew Mary, she always had a witty comment or remark to make, lightening the energy in the room. Most recently, when using a heating pad perhaps a little too long, she made a joke that it was okay and she was simply, well-cooked. In addition to her wonderful sense of humor, she was someone who always made you feel loved and appreciated. Whether you needed a warm cup of orange pekoe tea or a cold beer, meaningful advice or an empathetic ear, or the best hugs in the world, she had you covered.
She is survived by her grandson Christopher Tanner of Lebanon, NH, and step-son Aaron Lumbra of Georgia, VT; great-grandchildren Kaitlyn Tanner and Cole Tanner; grandchildren Devin Lumbra and Hannah Lumbra; her sister Doris (LaBelle) Jutras of Bakersfield; many nieces and nephews; and the Forands, Monettes, and Busiers.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, her husband Graydon, her daughter Starr Marie Tanner, and brothers David and Lucien LaBelle.
A celebration of life and memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 2, at the Goss-Spears Life Celebration Home, 96 Dickenson Ave., Enosburg Falls, VT beginning with a visitation from 10-11 am followed by a Memorial Service at 11 am. Interment will take place in the spring at Maple Grove Cemetery in Bakersfield, VT.
