Doris Louise Martell

MILTON: On the afternoon of January 4th, 2024, a beautiful spirit flew to Heaven. Doris Louise Martell passed into God’s arms at the McClure-Miller Respite House in the loving presence of her daughter Linda and son-in-law, Bruce Root.

Doris was the daughter of the late Ernest and Myrtle Elmer, born on June 6th, 1931. She grew up in Georgia, Vermont, and graduated from BFA-St. Albans in 1949.

Doris married James Martell on March 30th, 1957. Most of her married life was spent in Milton where they raised their only daughter, Linda. Doris worked in the office of the Milton Co-Op Creamery and later as a bookkeeper for the Milton School District. After retiring, she volunteered at the Milton Public Library, the Dinner Bell, and the Thrift Shop of the Milton United Church.

Doris cherished her family. One of her greatest joys was attending the sporting events and activities of her grandchildren. She was also an avid Celtics and Red Sox fan! She was a reading enthusiast and a skilled knitter. She loved music and had a beautiful singing voice. She could be seen zipping around in her little red Honda Civic whenever she could. Doris possessed a gentle spirit balanced with a keen wit and constant gleam in her eye.

Doris is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bruce Root of Westford, her grandchildren and their spouses, Joshua Root and Heather Dolloff of Middlebury, Bradley and Emily Root of Denver, Colorado, and Olivia and Jordan Pasha of Westford. She also leaves behind her beloved great-grandson, Weston Pasha of Westford and many loved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Doris was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Jim, and infant son, James Jr., brother, Leslie Elmer (Ruth), sister, Madeline Loomis (Mike), and parents-in-law, Wilfred and Laura Martell. Also predeceased are Jim’s siblings, Leonard Martell (Arlene), Velma Porter (Gordon), Dorothy Wilson (Joe), Wilfred Martell (Dorothy), and Blanche LeMay.

Doris will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Hers was a life well lived.

Per Doris’ wishes, a graveside service will be held in the spring at a time to be announced.

Please consider a donation in Doris’ memory to Franklin County Animal Rescue, 30 Sunset Meadow, St. Albans, VT 05478, or Vermont Children’s Hospital, 111 Colchester Avenue, East Pavilion, Level 4, Burlington, VT 05401.

The family would like to thank Dr. Alison Mercier, Julia from HHH, the staff at Green Mountain Rehab, and the doctors and nurses from Baird 3 for their excellent care. We would like to especially thank the wonderful staff at McClure-Miller Respite House for their love and respect on Mom’s final day.

Honored to be serving the family of Doris is Rett Heald of the Heald Funeral Home, where messages of condolence are welcome at www.healdfuneralhome.com
