THE MONTGOMERY NEWS, week of 2/5/2024

by Lois Lumbra

Sunday, 2/4: WOW!! Seeing is believing,  we had SUNSHINE most of today,!

Lay speaker John Gorton led our Sunday Church Service and served communion; his sermon was entitled “Everything to Everyone.” John updated the congregation that Pastor Bonnie Hoverman’s recovery is making progress. God Bless her with strength and health, she will be back to work soon.

1/30/24: Members of the Montgomery Quilting Circle, President Sue Peters, Patricia Martello, Cheryl Heneveld, Therese Begnoche, Cindy Gilchrist, Sue Hogan, and Lois Lumbra were welcomed at the Montgomery Elementary School to present their Vermont themed quilt to the 8th graders’ fundraiser for their class trip to Washington, D.C.

Every year, the quilters create a quilt to donate to a worthy cause. Knowing the 8th grade students are raising money for their class trip in May, the quilters feel this would be a perfect idea to help these students. The quilt presented was a large wall hanging size. The top was designed and sewn by Sue Hogan. During the presentation, Sue Hogan explained where her ideas for the design came from. A few years ago, some T-shirt blocks with the word “Vermont” printed on each along with a picture of a bird, skier, moose, or other Vermont icon were donated to the Quilting Circle. While organizing the T-shirt blocks into some kind of pattern, seeing the word “Vermont” each time, made Sue think of the slogan ‘I Love New York.’ Even though Sue enjoys visiting NY she thought ‘Vermont is where my heart is.’ She then asked Sue Peters if she could embroider the words, ”Where The Heart Is” below one of the Vermont blocks. Around the blocks, she used fall colored maple leaf blocks. In the center of the quilt, Sue made a large red heart surrounded by shades of white with snowflakes on the material, also with blue fabric, surrounded by a border of Holstein print. Other fabric pieces in the quilt included trees, rocks, and features similar to Vermont landscapes.

To finish the quilt, Sue, a retired music teacher, placed a piece of fabric cut into the shape of Vermont with the words of the Vermont state song, ‘These Green Mountains Are My Home’ (composed by Rita Buglass Gluck and Diane Martin) printed and topstitched in the center of the heart. The quilters had all chipped in to pay for the quilting beautifully done by Flo Verge of Newport, VT. The final step of sewing on the binding and tag was done by Sue Peters and Sue Cherrier.

Other members of the Quilters shared with the 8th grade students about the value of the quilt, expressing their belief in the benefits of the trip, and working hard to sell raffle tickets. The students were wished good luck with the raffle and the trip as pictures of the quilt, the Quilting Circle participants and 8th graders were taken.
