MONTGOMERY NEWS, week of April 8, 2024

On March 27, 2024, Hudson Vallender celebrated his 6th birthday. On March 31st his parents, Marty and Alysa Vallender, invited three of Hudson’s friends to accompany them to the Echo Center in Burlington to tour the museum displaying live animals, including reptiles, amphibians, and all kinds of fish. They enjoyed a very exciting day. Hudson got to hold a baby turtle.

Tuesday, 4/2: My niece Pamela Chaffee, from NH, and her friend Karen Cashen came up to ski at Jay Peak with the Seacoast Ski Club and 34 other members. We recently had a substantial snow storm and she reported that it was excellent skiing conditions. They all had a wonderful fun-filled trip.

There was a cute story on the local news recently. Someone had picked up a small frozen hedgehog, thinking it had been abandoned by the mother, and transported it to the animal shelter. The shelter people examined the critter only to find out it was a HAT! With all the hair or fuzzy whatever, made to hold its stiff shape, the situation became quite a laugh for many. Seeing the “hat” on TV, it was so realistic and understandable why someone would think it was an animal.

Sunday, 4/7: The morning was pleasant starting with clear skies and a northwest breeze that kept us all cool while the sun was shining brightly. Lay speaker, John Gorton, led our Church Service, and we had Communion. Happy Birthday was sung to Richard McAllister and Lyndol Elkins. Once back home, Penny and I went to do our shopping at Hannafords. There were no big crowds when we were there. In the afternoon, we joined the birthday crowd up at Jesse Soule’s sugar place. Jesse and his friend Jeffrey Donna share the same date. We all had an amazingly good time. While there, the little girl Charlotte Fuller lost a tooth and she was so excited to get that tooth out. Well, that started a story from different ones, and Sam Blouin remembered when he got a tooth out. He was outdoors with his brother who had a string attached to Sam’s tooth. When the string was yanked, the tooth came out and flew into the pea-stone driveway. They looked and looked for it but the tooth was never found.

Monday, 4/8: Our big exciting eclipse day has arrived and we watched right from our porch. Grandson David Newton, his girlfriend Jessica, Penny, and I watched it all from the beginning to the end. It was spectacular when it got all dark. The stars could be seen, the street lights came on, and the birds all quieted down. It looked like the birds flew down into the cedar bushes in the park, and then once it got light again, they flew back up into the trees. This is the reason I did not complete my NEWS last night. This was beautiful as the sun came back out. I hope everyone also was able to enjoy this spectacular SOLAR ECLIPSE!!

Happy birthday to Zoe LaBier 4/14; Marge Harrocks, David Martinson, Joe Sherman, Alan Kalsmith, David Brown, and Mike Abramowitz 4/18; and Arya Dollois Marshall 4/20.
