FOUR-GOAL SECOND SENDS T-BIRDS PAST RAIDERS
Missisquoi exploded for four goals in the second period on Wednesday, hanging on well for a 5-2 win over Stowe. Both teams entered the day with identical records and Missisquoi’s win should help the Thunderbirds avoid the bottom of the standings table the rest of the season.
Following a scoreless first, Holley MacLellan scored just 27 seconds into the second. Stowe (3-14) equalized four minutes later but Haley Stefianek responded with a goal just over a minute after the Raider score to give MVU (4-13) a 2-1 lead. Lindsey Gagne converted an Abigail Wilcox assist with 5:45 left to play in the second and Rory Schreindorfer scored from a MacLellan assist with 1:36 remaining in the period to give the Thunderbirds a 4-1 lead heading into the third.
Schreindorfer set up MacLellan for one more T-Bird goal just under two minutes into the third for a 5-1 lead. Missisquoi has had some trouble with leads this season, so it was unnerving when Stowe’s Isabel Donza scored her second of the day with just under three minutes gone in the third, but MVU played steadily to keep the scoreline at 5-2 the rest of the way.
In the exact opposite of the MVU/Stowe boys game which would follow, the girls’ teams combined for one penalty – an interference against MVU in the first period – as the Thunderbirds kept five skaters on the ice every second it held a lead. Kali Favreau-Ward stopped three shots in each period to earn a nine-save win for Missisquoi. The T-Birds fired 44 shots at the Raider goal, forcing 39 saves from Iris Cloutier.
MVU returns to action on Friday, hosting Burr & Burton.
