Evelyn Regina Doe Cross

January 26, 1928 – April 26, 2024

Evelyn was born in South Richford, VT on January 15, 1928, and was the second daughter of Aubrey and Yvonne Doe. She attended school in a one-room schoolhouse in Sheldon, VT, and grew up on farms in Sheldon and Berkshire. She was a graduate of Richford High School. Upon graduation, she was employed by H.K. Webster Company as an office secretary. In later years she worked as a secretary for the Hon. George T. Costes, Kilburn and Lynch, Attorneys at Law, and the Hon. John Mulvey of the Franklin County Probate Court.

Evelyn married Gerald H. Cross of Highgate Center, VT in 1949 and they were married for 54 years. Together they had a passion for old historic houses and purchased and restored four 18th and 19th century homes in St. Albans and Swanton, VT over the years. She also owned and operated the Red Store and Ashery (former Max Jolley general store) in Berkshire Center, VT for several years where she bought and sold antiques. She had a special interest in quality antique furniture and collected many pieces for her own home.

Evelyn was a former member of the Autonoe Club, the St. Albans Historical Society, the Swanton Historical Society, the St. Paul’s Methodist Church, and the Sports Car Club of Vermont. She was a current member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two sons and their wives: Peter H. (Pamela) Cross of St. Albans and Judson Shane (Michelle) Cross of Scottsdale, AZ.

Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Gerry in April 2003, her grandson Patrick Cross, her brother Norman Doe, and her older sister Madeline Colomb.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at the Trinity Presbyterian Church at 350 South Main Street, St. Albans VT. There will be no calling hours. Committal service will be at the Cross family mausoleum in the Highgate Center Cemetery following the service.
