MONTGOMERY NEWS, week of February 19, 2024

It’s Sunday, February 18th. It was a cold beginning at zero degrees F today. Merle Van Gieson prepared and led our Church Service, on the first Sunday of Lent, with his sermon entitled “Live In Peace.” Sandy Bowman read the Bible passages and the Prayers of Concerns and Joys; organist Patrick Evans played the special anthem.

2/13: The 500 Card Club met at Therese Begnoche’s residence for noontime. She had prepared many delicious treats for the afternoon play. Hostess Therese had a high score of 3170, which she said was because she had a good partner; the second high was Kathy Ross 2750, who was a sub for Anita Woodward; Carmen Scott had a low score of 1530, and most horses was 4 with Sue Cherrier. Brent Godin was sub in the absence of Marge Cummings. Everyone had a delightful fun-filled afternoon. Sue Wilson will host the March meeting at her home.

2/14: I accompanied Therese Begnoche and Connie McFarland to the Valentine’s Dinner at the Dairy Center, where we met up with friends from town. Also joining us was my niece, Melissa Tice, from Highgate, who had prepared delicious dipped strawberries and shared them with everyone at our table. She had packaged some up to add to items on the table where people bring in things to sell.

2/15: The Quilting Circle met at Therese Begnoche’s residence at noon time. We brought our lunch and sat around the huge dining room table to eat and chat and then enjoyed Therese’s delicious blueberry cobbler. Once lunch was finished, it was Show ‘n Tell time with new handbags that were also for sale, and two completed quilts by Therese B. that are being donated to a worthy cause. Sue Peters had completed several Log Cabin quilt blocks which became the afternoon quilting project. We got them organized, pressed, and passed to machine sewers Sue Cherrier and Therese B to finish.

Gazing out onto Therese’s backyard, we watched about 20 plus large turkeys that she says come looking for food just about every afternoon.

The Montgomery 8th graders remind everyone of their beautiful “Vermont Theme” Quilt Raffle for their class trip fundraiser to Washington, DC. Tickets can be purchased from any of the 8th grade classmates or their parents and will also be on sale at Town Meeting. Tickets are $10 each or 6 for $50. The winning ticket will be drawn during Family Karaoke Night, on Friday, March 8, 2024. 100% of the funds raised will benefit their class trip. The 8th graders are grateful for this generous quilt created and donated by the Montgomery Quilting Circle.

2/17: Penny and I attended the baby shower for my niece, Taylor White, and Connor Howrigan in St. Albans with their family and friends. They certainly received many nice gifts for baby Benson’s arrival. It was a lovely event as games were played and delicious food for everyone was enjoyed.

Once home from Church this forenoon, Penny received word from Steve Courville that his mother Betty Courville had passed away on February 17th. Betty Lumbra married Raymond Courville and had two sons.  Betty was the sister of my late husband Sonny (Francis) Lumbra. Steve will let the family know about the arrangements as soon as he knows.
