THE MONTGOMERY NEWS, Week of JULY 8, 2024
By Lois Lumbra
7/2: I had a surprise visitor inquiring about the Farrar family who lived on Black Falls Road. Wayne and Margaret Hill, who now live in Florida and often take road trips, came to Montgomery. His grandfather, Frank Hill, is buried here in the Village Cemetery. Wayne also knew the Hays family, and I mentioned Steve Hays has a small cabin on Green Mountain Road. I had a Montgomery History book which they were interested in. I told them usually the books are at Lutz Garage in the Center so off they went. I called Scott Perry and told him they were planning to see me on Wednesday, and he said that Steve Hays was in town and offered to drop off a Montgomery History Book for them.
That was done, but I did not see any sight of the Hills until Saturday afternoon, they had been by Wednesday and Friday and no one home either time so they ventured out to find where the Hays cabin was. Steve was there and they had a wonderful visit. They went up Black Falls Road, found some of the Farrar’s barns, and noticed all the changes since he was in town some 40 years ago. They went to the cemetery and found where Frank Hill was buried. The Hills were just a terrific couple to visit with and we exchanged emails to keep in touch. They will continue their travels for a few more months before returning to Florida in the Fall. We wish them safe travels. They are heading out on Monday, July 8.
On July 8th, it will be a year since I had that wicked infection hit me, I still have problems from that but much better as time goes on. I have been blessed by so many prayers and love.
7/4: What a wonderful Montgomery 4th of July celebration, the parade was one of the best ever, as many people remarked. The parade with all nine area fire departments was amazingly interesting and fascinating, even the noise of the sirens was thrilling. I want everyone to know their part in coming prepared in red, white, and blue was so amazing and appreciated for the wonderful long parade. Following the parade was the annual BBQ Chicken BBQ prepared by our local Fire Department chefs. It was delicious and enjoyed by so many people, in fact, this was the first time I stayed to eat with family and friends. There were several little tents put up on the Rec grounds and we were entertained by the band playing their wonderful music. It was a day full of love and excitement. The best Independence Day Celebration happened right here in Montgomery. Thank you to everyone who participated!
7/6: It is raining and very humid this morning and the Farmer’s Market is in progress, I can see some of the tents set up. The threat of a thunderstorm keeps me at home. Penny went down to visit with her friend, Kelly Elkins Maxfield. Pauline Domina folks from our Church family to go to her home in Enosburgh for a noontime BBQ picnic. I rode with my neighbors, Frank & Linda Elkins, and joined with several of Pauline’s family members. It was a joyous time sharing everyone’s potluck dishes making for a great feasting. We all had a wonderful time, despite the humidity and there were no thundershowers.
Sunday. July 7: It’s been an uplifting week with so much going on. I left for Church early this morning as there was a scheduled Trustee Meeting for 8 am. John Gorton joined our meeting and then was our layleader for the church service. Merle Van Gieson did the Communion with help from Lois. There was another party invitation from Therese Begnoche who was celebrating her 90th Birthday given by her niece, Lise Gates. Sue Peters stopped to give me a ride to the party. Therese was wearing a beautiful lighted crown and a sash that read Happy Birthday 90 years. Therese was excited to see all her family, neighbors, and friends. We were mostly out back sitting in the cool shade, visiting, and enjoying the snacks and cupcakes all beautifully decorated, with a birthday cake waiting to be cut. Congratulations Therese and many more wonderful years of Happiness, great friendships, and lots of LOVE. GOD BLESS!
