James Thomas Messier
James Thomas Messier passed away on July 31, 2023, at the age of 78. Born in Bakersfield, Vermont on July 7, 1945, Jim was the beloved son of Thomas and Eunice Messier, who preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his son Timothy Messier, his wife Denise Noble, and his sister Joanne Beaulieu.
Jim is lovingly remembered and survived by his sons Paul Messier and Kevin Messier, daughter-in-law Jonesha Messier, his stepson Bob Noble, brothers Gale Messier and Dale Messier and sister Beverly Emch.
Jim proudly served his country as a soldier in the Vietnam War, demonstrating bravery and commitment to his fellow servicemen. After returning home, he put down roots in Burlington and became an integral part of the community. Jim founded Messier’s Auto Repair Shop, which he ran for over 40 years alongside his son Tim and wife Denise. Even more than his appreciation of cars, he loved socializing with his customers and helping people in need.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim was also deeply engaged in his passion for the outdoors. Jim started hunting with dogs as a kid and carried that passion into adulthood as one of the founders and the first President of the Vermont Bear Hound Association. Jim was equally devoted to teaching others about hunter education safety, dedicating thirty years of his life to imparting essential knowledge to those pursuing their interests in the hunting world. He also created the first Burlington flag football team, running the Burlington youth football program for several years and guiding and mentoring countless young athletes along the way.
Naturally, this love of nature translated into his personal life, and Jim spent much of his free time outdoors, hunting and fishing with his family and friends. Each fall he would plan hunting trips all over the U.S. and Canada with friends and his sons, Tim, Paul, and Kevin. Later in life, as Jim got older, he looked forward to hunting in Michigan each year, at a hunting camp that became like a home away from home.
Jim was a true staple of the Burlington community, where his joyful presence brought smiles to many faces. His infectious laughter and genuine kindness touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we bid farewell to Jim, we celebrate his life, accomplishments, and the legacy he leaves behind. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched. May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory forever live on in the hearts of those he loved.
Visitation will be on Monday, August 7th from 4 – 7 pm at the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home located at 9 Pleasant Street in Essex.
The Funeral Service will be on August 8th at 11 am at St. Marks on North Ave in Burlington. A reception will be held at Burlington Elks Club immediately following.
